The first step in soldering is cleaning the surfaces (including the iron tip itself). They must all be clean and free from contamination. Then, you may melt flux onto the parts to be joined. The parts should both be heated above the melting point of the solder but below their own melting point with the soldering iron. When touched to the joint, this precise heating can cause the solder to flow to the place of highest temperature and makes a chemical bond. Do keep in mind that too much solder is an unnecessary waste but too little may be insufficient for supporting the component properly.
