Spring rotation can reduce stress for the gears only if both ends of the spring are free for spinning. As a cheap way to facilitate free spinning of the spring, you may use a ball bearing spring guide as well as a ball bearing inside the piston. Take your piston to a local bearing shop and get a bearing that can fit into the inside of the piston perfectly. When both ends of the spring have ball bearings, free spinning can be significantly facilitated.
